I *do* love this excuse. Happily, never a problem for me, as a non-driver...
I can honestly say that I've never backed out of a meeting at the last minute, although I *have* backed out of meetings.
I remember in the bad old days before mobile phones coming home to emails or ICQ (remember ICQ?) messages full of gushing apologies about mixed up times or places. More than once I've known for a fact they've been there and then just left.
Nowadays with mobiles and smartphones, there's no reason to back out at the last minute. If a rhino fell off the back of a truck onto the bonnet of your car, now you can take a photo of it with your phone and send it to the people you're meeting, and (hopefully) push back you meeting time. It's courtesy and common sense, ffs.

I personally hate making or giving excuses its rude unbecoming and unless real should never be made, however I have done it and always offer to go well out of my way to prove it was not just an excuse if the other party wont accept my offer I sadly apologise

I don't do the boys only stuff unless I've met the couple beforehand and ascertained if its allowed. Too many singles posing as couples, not to mention couple and single profiles who are cheating on their parners ir their partners don't know he's bi.
I have been burned in the past so all couples are met together for a chat if she doesn't want to play but gives her consent I'm cool with that
